Phaistos

Phaistos was the second most important city of Minoan Crete after Knossos. The Minoan palace of Phaistos corresponds to a flourishing city that developed in the Messara Valley around 6000 BC. The first palace was built in 2000 BC by King Minos and was destroyed by an earthquake in 1700 BC. Excavations in the area have revealed many significant findings. Most of the buildings visible today date back to the Neo-Palatial period, which spans from 1700 to 1450 BC. If you are looking for the Phaistos Disc, it is housed in the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion.

How will you get to the Phaistos Palace?

Phaistos Palace is located about 55 kilometres from Heraklion. It takes approximately one hour to reach the site by car.
