The Arkadi Monastery was established either between 961 and 1014 or during the early years of the Venetian occupation. According to historical records, it was founded by a monk named Arcadius. The monastery became a renowned centre for manuscript copying and housed a goldsmith’s workshop, with some manuscripts and artworks still on display today. However, it is primarily celebrated for its significant role in resisting Ottoman rule during the Cretan Revolution. In addition to its historical importance, the monastery features impressive architecture, making it a must-visit destination.
