Neapoli is a small town located in the prefecture of Lasithi, surrounded by dense olive groves. It is 45 km from Heraklion and 15 km from Agios Nikolaos. This quiet town boasts a rich history and several points of interest, including the Court of First Instance, the old high school which now serves as a hospital, the Metropolis of Petra, and the impressive structure of the old orphanage that houses the archaeological collection.
During the Venetian occupation, Neapoli was known as Kares, which translates to “walnuts” in the Cretan dialect. The village of Kares was destroyed and later rebuilt by the Venetians, who renamed it Kainourgio Chorio. During the Turkish occupation, the town experienced significant development and was the capital of the Lassithi prefecture until 1904.
